Appropriate shoulder carriages for American cartridge boxes and bayonet belts should be of black or russet brown leather, woven linen webbing with leather ends, or black or brown cowhide leather painted white on the flesh side, and in some cases buff leather. Buff leather was not regularly available to makers of Continental Army accoutrements but was used when available. An alternative to buff leather is tanned leather painted white to simulate buff. In the Don Troiani Collection there is an example of this type carriage attached to a pouch stamped "U. States". |
